Sculptures

Here at Brightwells, our newly landscaped gardens are home to a stunning collection of public art, featuring a series of ten magnificent sandstone figures created by the acclaimed artist and stone carver, Patrick Walls.

Patrick, based at a quarry on the northern edge of the Peak District, specialises in carving stone and casting metals, often creating large-scale sculptures for the public domain. His work, whether figurative or abstract, frequently explores two dominant themes: “air/water” and “volume/time.”

Commissioned specifically as part of the Brightwells development, Patrick’s ten life-sized figures stand at an impressive 2.3 metres each, intricately carved from sandstone. This entire project is a thoughtful celebration of Farnham’s rich craft history, firmly positioning the town as a world-class destination for craft.

Each sculpture beautifully depicts a different craft synonymous with Farnham’s heritage, representing local skills and trades. These figures are thoughtfully placed in three distinct groups:

Group 1: Features a painter, glassblower, blacksmith, and weaver
Group 2: Showcases a ceramicist, brewer, and cabinet maker
Group 3: Depicts hops, barley, and a wheelwright

We encourage you to take a stroll through the Brightwells gardens, admire Patrick Walls’ incredible craftsmanship, and connect with Farnham’s vibrant artistic and craft legacy. It’s a truly unique addition to our outdoor space, waiting to be explored.
